Boots vs hiking shoes

I used EMS ankle walking shoes, chosen because they felt comfortable and
because they were not too heavy. They wore fairly well all the way from St
Jeans, however, they were not waterproof, eventually they presented a problem
when it was raining, or the grounds were wet (as coming down from the
Pyrenees). When I had to walk for days and days in the pouring rain I
regretted having chosen those particular shoes as walking became extremely
difficult.
I am now looking again for shoes, for my pilgrimage next June, but this time
I will make sure that they are water proof, even if somewhat heavy.
Those US pilgrims I met spoke very highly of their Vasc boots.
