I have wrestled with this problem for decades, having been born in the UK and worked for a USA company (and married a USA citizen ��).

IEEE Standards expect USA spelling.  The rest of the world-- including ISO Standards -- expects international (British) spelling.  I chose (and still choose) 'mid-Atlantic' spelling, where it makes sense.  "Hue" rather than "Colour", etc.

There are plenty of alternative words to 'behavio[u]r'.  Just change to one of the alternatives that neither riles one community nor the other.
