HI, this addresses Damian's recent comment:
I thought we had gone away from the concept of "pole" error to be
more a
generic singularity.
The names of errors arose last fall during discussion that led to proposal
N3405, "improved wording for treatment of error conditions in <math.h>". I
did object to the abuse of "pole" to include essential singularities.
Ultimately, it was better to table that objection and draft N3405 to deal
with the more substantive issues of the language of 7.12.2.
