Should consistency mean that it should replace "rounding direction mode"?

Likewise, the term "rounding direction" where it is regularly used as an 
abbreviation for "rounding direction mode".

You could always say that "rounding mode" is the short form of the much 
longer "rounding direction mode" and after the first mention of the longer 
form, just use "rounding mode" thereafter.
