Proposal for C2Y
WG14 Nxxxx
Title: Nonsensical parenthetical
Author, affiliation: C FP group
Date: 2024-05-23
Proposal category: Technical
Reference: Base document: N3219

There has been a question on whether the various NAN and INFINITY macros are allowed to raise floating-point exceptions. The following change attempts to address this by making it explicit that they are not allowed to do so (as intended).

After 7.1.2 #7, insert the paragraph

The evaluation of the replacement for an object-like macro described in this clause or Annexes F, Annex G, Annex H, or Annex K shall not raise a floating-point exception*.

*) As with other evaluations, a floating-point exception could still be raised in the context of an expression that uses that macro replacement.

Questions:

  1. Is the footnote needed or wanted?
