You may already have seen a similar note on the Standard 754 reflector.

As the 754 working group gears up for another revision, you might enjoy
this link back to William Kahan's Floating Point Exposé of 1988:

The page and class speak for themselves, but a little added context might
be useful here. The class opened 10 years after we brought a first draft of
a proposal to the third meeting of the 754 committee. And that was more
than a year after Kahan began consulting on the Intel 8087 Math Coprocessor.

The good professor emeritus is alive and in remarkably good form in
Berkeley. As chance would have it, this lands the day after his 91st
birthday.
