Hi,

What is the name given to this requirement?  Any references besides maybe 
Kahan's Much Ado about Nothing?

Also, I notice that this requirment is not universal in the LIA (Language 
Independent Arithmetic = ISO 10967-3), or more correctly, only applicable 
for some z, e.g. in arctan it only applies for

 	Re(z) != 0 or Im(z) <= 1

That restriction is removed in the C standard's complex arithmetic.

What is the logic behind that? Any references?
