Nice summary; thanks.

I use binary FP normalisation as an example of 'premature optimisation'.
Just to save one bit a poor design was standardised and has caused pain that
has lasted 40 years -- long after that saving has had any tangible benefit
(and will no doubt cause pain for many more years).

Down there with QWERTY, perhaps.... :-).
