Agreed this issue is more global than the classification macros.

I cannot find any words in C11 or TS 18661-1 that say the FP exception
flags are only cleared/lowered by functions in 7.6.2 and 7.6.4

I have encountered an implementation where isnan() clears the FP
exception flags.
