Where the conventional x86 calling conventions bit us at Sun was when we
tried to produce x86 analogs to SPARC functions infinity(), quiet_nan(),
signaling_nan() which returned the indicated items.

The 32-bit ABI returns floating-point function values on the stack.
signaling nans are a problem there.       They were not a problme as 
arguments, being passed on the stack as Steve observes.
