Hmm. Could we reconsider _FloatN? I believe we discarded it because 
float already has a meaning in C as the small generic floating type, 
which could be binary or decimal and could have any (big enough) size. 
But float is very widely binary32, and for 754 (Annex F) 
implementations, float must be binary32.  If we regard double as sort of 
a double float, then _FloatN doesn't seem so odd.
